Son's Review

(Age: 7)

What to know: It's a good book. It's about a girl who imagines what she would do with a kangaroo if she had one for a pet.

What T liked: My favorite part was the part where the kangaroo was on the trampoline with the basketball because I really like basketball. And the kangaroo poop was very funny.

What T made the cat say: Will there be an If I had a kitty book?

Mom's Review

Our little yellow-bonneted friend is back, this time with a kangaroo in tow. Rhymes and laughter flow as we see what the pair gets up to, from sleeping in the kangaroo's pouch to poop scooping. Barrow and Dawnay's success with the the If I had a... series continues; part of readers' delight comes from the familiar storyline's reinvention (particularly the poop joke). The unique details in each installment make each book fresh and maintain the novelty of imagining an unusual pet. Plus, each book references the previous ones - when I read this to T and a friend, it kicked off a "read them all" session where the kids had to find the cat, and see what else was the same and different in each book (don't miss out on the girl's wallpaper and bedspread...). If you've read the other books in the series, you won't want to miss out on If I had a Kangaroo. And if you haven't, the series is seriously worth checking out.
