8 Picture Books to Put You in the Mood for
πŸŽƒHalloweenπŸ¦‡

There are a million book lists out there for anything imaginable. I'm not saying that ours is better, but I do think these 8 are worth a look. We enjoy these because they are spooky, cute, or answer our questions about the holiday. Clickable titles take you to our more in-depth book reviews.

1. weird but true! Halloween
From National Geographic Kids, 2020

Reading a few facts at a time, over the course of October, keeps the spirit of Halloween alive all month long.

2. The Story of Halloween
By Carol Greene

This explains the origins of the holiday and how it changed with the Romans and then the Catholics, and how it spread around the globe. Straightforward text is easy for young children to understand, and this one answered many of the questions that we had about various customs (jack-o-lanterns, bobbing for apples, trick-or-treating, wearing costumes, to name a few).

3. What Do You Celebrate?
By Whitney Stewart

Halloween in Ireland is introduced and explained on one two-page spread (this book covers holidays around the globe). A bright illustration shows children playing Snap Apple, directions for which are included.  I like how this book puts each holiday in a global context. (If you turn the page, the next holiday is DΓa de los Muertos.)

4.
Haunted House
By Jan Pienkowski

Classic pop-up tour through a haunted house! A single sentence appears along the bottom of each room, addressed to an unseen doctor who is supposed to be visiting the home. Readers will see a spaghetti monster in the kitchen, a crocodile in the bathtub, and a giant bat in the attic, as well as a black cat that appears on every page.

5. The Scary Book
By Dedieu
Fun spookiness that feels seasonal.

By Marion Dane Bauer
A gender-neutral child leaves town on Halloween night, dressed as a skeleton. A rhythmical narration invites the reader to be that child, go into a bone forest, not be scared, and get all the candy. It's cute. It's fun. The verse is catchy. The underlying message is to just have fun on the holiday and not be frightened.

7. Let's Find a Pumpkin (Duck and Goose)
By Tad Hills

Duck and Goose. Need I say more? I love reading this one and doing my little voices for Duck and Goose. I don't want to let them go. And T doesn't mind a board book now and then.

8. Little Blue Truck's Halloween
By Alice Schertle

It's a Little Blue Truck lift-the-flap. Readers can see who is hiding beneath each costume while singing/rapping/reading along with the repetitive, "Who do you see?" "It's me. It's me!"
