Mom's Review
Gustavo the Shy Ghost, Leila the Perfect Witch, and Vlad the Fabulous Vampire are all sweet picture books with slightly spooky - but not scary - vibes. The three titular characters each struggle with fitting in with their stereotypes in some way and learn through failure to be themselves and trust the people the care about. Each character tries to solve his or her problem and faces disappointment along the way. Drago's unique art style and combination of narrative text and speech bubbles invite readers to enter the world of Gustavo where young monsters can enjoy tradition without being subordinate to it. The stories are sweet stories that prompt consideration of how we solve our problems and of how we see ourselves. While not Halloweeny specifically, they do fit in nicely with the spooky season.
