Mom's Review
This true story of a miracle experienced by a Ukrainian Jewish community is truly a light in the darkness of Russia's war against Ukraine. Readers follow Andrei as he recalls Hanukkahs past, shelters from Russian bombs, finds his synagogue's menorah intact - the only intact object amid the bombed-out shell of the house of worship, and lights it to connect with the Ukrainian refugees as well as those who remain. Reflecting the original miracle after the Maccabees fought for religious freedom, Mariupol's miracle reminds us to remain steadfast in the face in the hatred and oppression. This beautiful telling of the events concludes with an author's note and a letter from the Mariupol rabbi that are must-reads. A valuable addition to the holiday shelf.
