Four Adorable Halloween Board Books

Spotlight on Halloween Board Books from Candlewick Press

I loved having a stack of seasonal books to read with T when he was little! Here are some board books for Halloween that I found adorable and enjoyable for the adult who is doing the reading.

Pick a Pumpkin
Written by Patricia Toht
Illustrated by Jarvis
Pick a Pumpkin offers longer text than the other board books I'm sharing. It is ideal for a lap read - the length allows enough time to get comfy with your little one and the text itself has a pleasant cadence for read aloud. Between Jarvis's detailed illustrations and an actual plot with a family getting their pumpkin and carving it before going tout to trick or treat, this feels more like a picture book in board book form rather than a baby book for introducing the concept "book."

Monsters Play...Trick or Treat!
and Monsters Play... Hide-and-Seek! Lift the Flaps
By Flavia Z. Drago
These are sturdy , and once you free the flap for the first time, easy to lift. Little ones will have fun exploring each book, finding treats (like cookies) or tricks (like farts) in the Trick or Treat book and seeing friendly characters in the Hide-and-Seek book. If you have an older child who likes the Gustavo Ghost books, this is the same characters but for little hands. Both are cute and festive, and I love how the youngest audience is prompted to interact with the books!

The House with Nobody in It

By Jon Klassen
Adorable peek-through pages are study for little fingers. The narrator invites the reader to explore any empty house, moving from room to room and identifying the contents. No mention is made of the gentle-looking ghost halfway through the book. It's as though only the reader can see it, not the narrator. I love how Klassen's books inspire imagination and leave room for the reader to bring her own experience to how she interprets the story. The House with Nobody in It is no different - sparse text and simple illustrations offer children room for make-believe. Perfect for spooky season!
