In The Country I Love is one of the most moving YA books I have read. We follow two young Muslim men, one who is a teen dad, as they navigate being "other" in a prestigious high school and while they struggle with how they each understand their friendship and their faith. This powerful novel will resonate with readers who question their faith, disagree with their parents, or feel like they have to change themselves to fit in with their peers. Both Yassir and Khaled were complicated, imperfect, absolutely realistic, sympathetic, and at time dislikable characters whose stories so fully captivated me that my heart hurt for them and I could not stop thinking about them long after closing the book. If you or your teen wants excellently written, thought-provoking literature, this is it.
