Mom's Review
This graphic novel about Nel, one half a pair of fraternal twins, rings so true to teenhood. We follow Nel as she navigates friendships, a parent who shows favoritism to her brother, and her identity as a musician. This complex character is relatable and alternately likeable and detestable at times. She lives out the tough time that high school is for so many, finding solace in music. A really cool aspect of the book is that when she reads about different women in the music world, we get to see the articles she's reading on her phone and learn about them alongside her. We also read text exchanges she has with friends. The only thing I didn't like is that sometimes those conversations were hard to read because of size and color. Everything Amplified is thought-provoking and will stay with you long after you finish this quick read. It's very good. Period.
Son's Review
Everything Amplified is a book about a girl who is her brother's twin. She wants to be in a band, but she is too nervous. In my opinion there were ZERO likeable characters in this book, and the only likeable character ( aunt Jan ) ended up being a jerk. Her brother is an epic jerk. Even though you're supposed to feel sympathy for him and like him at the end of the story, I thought he was still a mega jerk! Also, the ending wasn't that great because the main character's brother just stands up for her and then they are just automatically friends again after all the mean stuff he did to her.
