Bear Heart and the Evergreen Tree
holds a frame narrative where readers learn the story of the evergreen tree within the frame of a little girl collecting needles with her grandmother. The grandmother's words transport and the girl and us to long ago when Bear Heart's care for his Tribe prompted him to ask the Great Spirit to allow him to continue watching over his Tribe past the time of his natural death. Transformed into an evergreen tree, Bear Heart continued to shield his community and convey their prayers to the Great Spirit.

The highlight of this book is how the grandmother answers the girl's questions about prayer. In explaining why we pray and how to know we are answered, the two discuss the impact prayer has on the person praying and how there is a ripple effect outward. The conversation about the purpose and efficacy of prayer is one of the best I've read and is easy to understand without being pedantic in any way.

If you want to talk about prayer, Bear Heart and the Evergreen Tree is the best.
