Mom's Review
OMG! I totally feel Oliver! He does not want to go on that camping trip. But in retrospect he did have some fun. It was a mixed bag, but he was glad he did it.
Young readers can identify with Oliver as he gets dragged along with his mom and endures an interminable car ride before being forced to eat something undesirable. But Miles also models self-reflection and considers the positive aspects of the trip. We never see his mom get annoyed with him, despite his reluctance; we never see Miles snap at his mom, despite her leaving him no choice but to go on an adventure. Miles and his mom both navigate a fun and challenging trip with aplomb and good humor, strengthening their relationship, cultivating their relationship with the natural world, and finding joy in screen-free time. A Room with a View is a relatable story that validates children's wish to stay home while also encouraging a positive outlook.
