Mom's Review
The Storm Cloud is a pretty clear metaphor for mild depression; when Bear can't bring himself to socialize with his friends and just lies in bed, they offer emotional support, accepting his cloud and encouraging him to maintain his usual social habits. Readers see how blue (figuratively and literally) Bear is and how the cloud that no one else can see plagues him. Although Bear's friends cannot see the cloud, they believe him that it is there, which actually helps reduce its size - the audience sees nuanced compassion on the part of Bear's empathetic friends. The Storm Cloud offers a look at complex emotions without simplifying them; it's great discussion opener and would a good fit for a preschool or kindergarten audience.
