Mom's Review
Captain Polo in Brazil, the fourth book in the conservationist graphic novel series, tackles a serious subject without taking itself too seriously. Hesse strikes just the right balance between entertainment and education with a talking polar bear who is trying to get his penguin friend home to Antarctica while promoting ecological conservation along the way. The two are sidetracked to Brazil when they see their arch-nemesis, the oil tycoon Tex Greedyman, up to no good in the Amazon rainforest. As they attempt to thwart him, they run into every disaster imaginable. All the characters are caricatures, which underscores the superlative nature of each problem and the global impact each destructive act has.
By not taking itself too seriously, this graphic novel conveys its message of urgency in an accessible way for kids. Readers will see the impact of slash and burn deforestation, gold mining, and more. They will also be highly entertained by the comedy of errors unfolding as the villains try to out maneuver Captain Polo. I think young readers will have a lot of fun with this comic whose villains remind me of Natasha and Boris from Bullwinkle and whose hero could happily team up with Captain Planet.
