You absolutely must start and end with the end papers! This was Not the Plan is a fun comparison of two different approaches to handling events that do not match the plan.
Spike and Roscoe's camping trip agenda is fun-filled and PERFECT. But nothing happens according to plan. Spike is disheartened at every turn, but Roscoe sees the fun they have. In the end, Spike realizes that just because the camping trip didn't happen as he envisioned, he still had a good time. Both Spike and Roscoe are adorably drawn, and their antics will have little ones smiling as they follow the two friends through the forest. While the moral of the story is forefront, and the dialogue between the two becomes predictable, this picture book is cute and enjoyable with a comfortable read aloud cadence and many opportunities for the adult reader to embrace the characters' big emotions through dramatic reading. This was Not the Plan is fun and effective at conveying its lesson.
