Mom’s Review
The Polar Bear and the Ballerina is an absolutely stunning wordless picture book. There is much you can read into it, from the most superficial level of a polar bear enjoying ballet to a more critical look at prejudice within ballet and society at large. On any level the story is moving, and rereads offer something new to contemplate and consider each time. Young readers can connect with the red scarf girl as she welcomes the polar bear to view the ballet featuring images of that same polar bear. They can likewise identify with the polar bear who dreams of dancing ballet after witnessing the captivating performance by red scarf girl. A beautiful story of connection, trust, and art. Whether you like ballet or not, I would be shocked if you did not like this.
