The Dreadfuls

After reading The Resurrectionist, I was beyond excited when I found out she was writing The Dreadfuls. And let me tell you, it absolutely did not disappoint! If I try to tell you just how much I loved it, just how hard it was to put it down, it will sound hyperbolic, but it would be the truth. So, it was the BEST!!! I lost so much sleep because I didn't want to close the book!!! I read it in a total of three sittings, and it was that many because I have a job that I have to go to. If I could have read straight through, I would have.
The basis of the story is Jack the Ripper's reign of terror, through the lens of a girl committed to a reform school. The characters, the pacing, the events, the setting, the MOOD...what else was superlative? Adelaide lives in girls' school in Whitechapel, where she follows news of the murders with her roommate. As they venture out into the neighborhood, they begin to investigate the cases themselves, following red herrings and contriving ridiculous theories until they stumble upon reality. Dark and compelling, The Dreadfuls is a must-read for fans of mysteries, books set in the Victorian era, and Jack the Ripper theories.
