Son's Review

King Lear is about a king that banishes the only 1 of his daughters that actually loved him. Then all his other daughters try to kill him. In my opinion the story itself was mediocre and wasn't as good as some of the bard's other works ( Macbeth ) but the artwork and how they turned it into a manga was PEAK.

Part 2
So yesterday was Free Comic Book Day and I got this manga called The Journey West just because the cover looked good and it turned out to be a preview for another Manga Classics book about the monkey king; Sun-Wu-Kong and it had an advertisement for a Sherlock Homes Manga Classic so I hope to get more Manga Classics to review!

Mom's Review
I read King Lear  a few years ago and really struggled to envision everything that was happening. I reread scenes and tried to keep everything straight. All those people who say Shakespeare is meant to be watched and not read? I am totally with them when it comes to King Lear!

Fast forward to today. My 11YO reads Shakespeare's unabridged King Lear and finds it perfectly accessible. Same text. Wildly different experiences. Why? Because he read the manga version where each scene, each dialog, each setting is depicted. It's essentially watching the play, but on paper. So, yeah. My 11YO found King Lear easy to read.  I am perfectly happy to have him read more Shakespeare in manga form. I only wish I had had this version to read myself a few years ago.
