Mom's Review

Bilingual books are a great way to practice or be introduced to a second language. Let's Go to the Market offers English and Hindi, and the Hindi is written in Devanagari as well as being transliterated. This Bilingual Beginnings series book follows a girl as she explores the items available at her local market. While the primary aim of the book is to introduce vocabulary, the plot is not sacrificed. It is the fun story of a little girl observing and enjoying her surroundings; Sehgal and Garg pay tribute to the value of being present to what is happening while they also offer linguistic support. Let's Go to the Market is a perfect lap read for discussing shopping, fruits and vegetables, or even what one does with Mom on a daily basis.

I don't know Hindi, and I don't know Thai, but when Son was little we had several bilingual books written in English and Thai that we would read with him. Exposure to other languages and other scripts, in my opinion, lays the groundwork for appreciating languages and then cultures not one's own. And that's part of why I particularly value bilingual books for kids, even when the kids or caregivers can't read both scripts.
