Mom's Review

Hot Food Nice! is hilarious. The short tale of a boy finding out that his dad doesn't know everything showcases the universal experience of putting a bite of too-hot food in your mouth. Devoting an entire book to this little experience emphasizes our shared human experiences and that those experiences (minor though they may seem) are what make up our days and are therefore worth noticing. Hot Food Nice! makes me think of Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth. There is a population of people whose city turned invisible because they stopped noticing it. Laughing together about the dad's reaction to a mouthful of hot food unites the audience in shared humanity. Also, the dad's reaction is just plain outrageous and fun to laugh at. Hot Food Nice! is a win!
