Mom's Review
Fight for the Right to Read depicts one episode in the fight for equal rights. Samuel Wilbert Tucker was instrumental in securing equal library access for Black and white residents of Alexandria by asserting his right to use the public library and thereby launching the long-lasting community and legal battle that lasted decades. This picture book effectively communicates the range of reactions he faced - the hatred and racism as well as the support. Gottesfeld, Green, and Holt convey how challenging the progress toward equal rights was - and how Tucker's 1939 actions were only the first step in a 20 year struggle. The authors convey the facts clearly, in terms young readers can understand. Fight for the Right to Read is a powerful book. Understanding and appreciating the freedom to read and the right to free public library access feel particularly relevant today.
