Giving Thanks with Halmoni is a celebration of multigenerational families and intergenerational friendship. When one girl's grandmother moves to the US from Korea, the girl and her two BFFs want to make sure that Halmoni (Grandma) feels welcome. They guess that she will miss celebrating the upcoming Korean holiday Chuseok, so they enlist Halmoni to teach them about it and get their whole friend group together to celebrate with her. The girls extend a heartfelt friendship to Halmoni - it doesn't matter which granddaughter is hers, they all assume that role, which Halmoni clearly rejoices in. The combination blood and found family celebrates Chuseok, and all find their lives enriched by celebrating together, regardless of background. The message of celebrating diversity does not come across heavy handed though, it's simply a perfect example of how we are richer for our differences.
