Mom's Review

I often feel dissatisfied with the set up of my city, so the idea of a "cities of the future" book piqued my interest.

Cities of the Future takes readers around the world, looking at innovative urban plans. All of the ideas set forth for sustainable, green, community-focused living are already successful around the globe, not to mention just plain cool to look at. I think a book like this is important for kids and the adults reading with them. Seeing alternatives to car-filled cities with unsustainable, insufficient housing and lack of green spaces can prompt imagination and action. I really do think it is hard to advocate for improved living conditions, or any change, really, if you haven't seen examples or don't talk about future growth. A book that brings together the best ideas from around the globe for a young audience can be a powerful tool. Now I don' think this single book is going to chance the world, nor do I think every kid is going to read it. What I do think is that the mere fact of its mass publication indicates a receptive market for sustainable thinking and a mindset for improving living conditions in cities. Cities of the Future has its little role to play.

Plus the book is amusing and curious to explore on the most superficial level.
