Suka's Farm
Written by Ginger Park and Frances Park
Illustrated by Tiffany Chen
Published by Albert Whitman & Co.
Mom's Review
Inspired by the experience of their father as a young boy working on a goat farm in Japanese-controlled Korea, authors Ginger and Frances Park have crafted a powerful story of compassion and respect. Suka's Farm is narrated by young Kwan who asks to work for Mr. Suka in order to help put food on his family's table. Readers will be gratified to see Mr. Suka's recognition of shared humanity with Kwan's family and his compassionate, just actions. This picture book is a timely reminder that although a government may adopt dehumanizing policies, we don't have to lose our humanity or deny that of others.
