Mom's Review
Freedom at Dawn tells the almost unbelievable but true story of Lizzy's escape from slavery during the Civil War. Because her father, Robert Smalls, was an adept wheelman who regularly piloted boats for the Confederate army, he was able to smuggle his family, himself, and several other families out of Charleston to ultimately meet with Union ships off the coast. Freedom at Dawn is told from Lizzy's perspective; she is proud of her father and reassured by his steadfastness during when confronted with danger. Chillingly close calls and powerful illustrations underscore the tension she feels during the nighttime voyage, drawing the reader more deeply into her story. Freedom at Dawn is an excellent non-fiction narrative for a young audience.
Back matter offers and overview of the Civil War and details about Robert Smalls's life and the far-reaching impact of his actions.
