Mom's Review

A Teddy Bear for Emily
communicates a heartwarming episode in America's history: the institution of the "Teddy" bear. Readers will understand who created the celebrated "Teddy's bear" and why they - Jewish immigrants from Russia in the 1880's - already esteemed Roosevelt. Back matter offers more information on the Michtoms and stuffed bears in general.

I like how the daughter, Emily, is placed at the center of this history of a child's toy. Emily's curiosity and desire to be involved will resonate with a young audience who likely have their own teddy bears at home. Focusing on Emily also allows Churnin to offer context to Emily's experience through the mother's storytelling of family history. Churnin and Stancliffe have crafted a wonderful package of education, emotion, and entertainment.
