Three Tasks for a Dragon
is a fantastic early chapter book based on Irish folklore, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. As soon as the book is opened, the lyrical language and magical illustrations whisk the reader away to a time of dragons, curses, and enchantment. The reader follows a prince who is pure of heart. The victim of treachery, he uses his wits to save himself and his apparent antagonist, the titular dragon. Following a betrayal of the worst kind that results in years of suffering, a bittersweet ending reveals the breaking of his curse and restoration of his beloved at a high cost: the self-sacrifice of his dearest friend. Three Tasks for a Dragon tugs at the heartstrings as the reader witnesses evil overcome good for a time and the price paid for love. It is an absolutely tremendous and worthwhile read and a satisfying emotional adventure.
