Already the title page makes the reader say, "Aww!" looking at little Lionel! What a cutie! And no wonder Maverick feels jealous. Maverick, the family's first dog, is displaced by the new dachshund puppy and is not pleased about it. Lionel and Me beautifully gives voice to the complex feelings involved in sibling rivalry, acknowledging the heartache that comes with being displaced by the "new," but also showing the love that that older one feels for the baby eventually. Sweet, heartwarming, and lovely for reading aloud, Lionel and Me is a great book for pet owners and an audience who has babies in their families.
