Goosepimples and a pricking behind my eyes - such a reaction I had to the initially sickening extermination of grey wolves in Yellowstone and ultimately uplifting reestablishment in the park. Why Wolves Matter is a powerful depiction of what happens when a predator is removed from the ecosystem. Winnick outlines the devastation effected by the wolves' removal -an overabundance of elk overconsume the flora to the detriment of other species and themselves. Leaving white spaces on the pages where the animals driven out by the elk's impact drives how incomplete the ecosystem is. The illustrations are jarring and communicate effectively how wrong an environment becomes when a cornerstone species is gone. Readers viscerally feel how vital wolves are while intellectually comprehending their vital role. Back matter includes a timeline of Yellowstone's documented history.

This informational picture book is an excellent addition to any child's shelf, underscoring the importance of safeguarding our environment.
