Mom's Review
Sharing is Caring, Dragon returns to our our beloved cast of characters: Dragon, knight, princess, and cat. While a tenuous friendship developed between Dragon and the knight in the last book, it is clear that things are far from perfect when the two meet at the library. The knight has taken Dragon's favorite book, Catittude. Although Dragon selects other books to borrow, a tussle ensues after they leave the library, launching the book into the bushes. When Dragon and the knight finally locate it, they find the princess reading aloud to a group and realize that they can all enjoy Cattitude together.
I love Sharing is Caring, Dragon! First and foremost, Dragon is relatable and loveable. What young bookworm has not dealt with disappointment or not had first pick for something desirable? Dragon handles the situation pretty well at first, managing her emotions and finding alternatives. But when she gets outside, the grabby hands take over - very relatable to every little kiddo I've known. The important thing is that Dragon and the knight both realize they behaved unkindly, they make amends, and they learn from the situation. Young readers can easily identify and empathize with Dragon.
In fact, empathizing is almost impossible with how the reader is invited to connect with Dragon. Being asked to give Dragon a pat to console her, opening the library door for her, or whispering, "Bye," are all invitations the narrator issues to involve the reader deeply in the book. This encouragement to actively engage with the literature and not sit back as a causal observer is what makes the Dragon series so great. Between the art, the narration, the engagement, and the life lessons, Sharing is Caring, Dragon is a real winner and one that readers will enjoy time and again.
With this new, valuable lesson for readers who love Dragon, Schulze and Hardy build on an established series that has staying power. Sharing is Caring, Dragon might just be my favorite Dragon book after Don't Wake the Dragon, the book that started it all.
Son's Reaction
I thought it was really cool that it had an actual book - that Dragon's favorite book is a book we reviewed!
