Mom's Review
Building a Beak is a simple story about a serious subject - the underlying issue is animal cruelty. While this nonfiction picture book is uplifting in how the international community came together to save an injured toucan and enact animal cruelty prohibition laws, it is chilling to acknowledge that these efforts were necessary in the first place.
The story is written matter-of-factly and the images are no-frills; the content speaks for itself and needs no adornment. Young child will adore Grecia the toucan. She brings out one's protective urges, and indignation and anger that humans would willfully harm animals and destroy their habitat. Building a Beak, though elementary at first glance brings out strong emotions and prompts the audience to consider global conservation efforts and our role as stewards of the earth. Build a Beak is unassumingly powerful.
Back matter includes more details about Grecia's rescue.
