Mom's Review

I find waste exceedingly difficult to tolerate, so when Abuela's savings became obsolete with the introduction of the new peso, this picture book took a turn I had seriously not anticipated. The not-so-little-anymore Nina, however, comes up with a creative plan that reconnects her with her grandmother.

A Gift From Abuela follows the changing relationship between Nina and her grandmother. Economic and political changes affect Mexico while Nina grows up; all of this impacts daily life and habits, but not their love. I like how Nina realizes that she hasn't seen her grandmother in a while and takes responsibility to rectify that. This is a gentle reminder that relationships are two-way streets, requiring both parties' investment to flourish. Neither Nina nor her grandmother can shoulder all their interactions nor provide fully for the other, but each can make time for the other and put forth an effort to show their care, like when Nina cleans Abuela's kitchen and when Abuela treats them to pan dulce in the park.

It is the realistic depiction of how changing situations impact can challenge relationships, accompanied by characters who model reconnection that cannot be lauded enough. And I have not even mentioned how beautifully the prose flows. A Gift From Abuela is an excellent book in its own right, and a perfect selection for grandparents to share with their grandchildren.
