Hamza Attends a Janaza
is perfect for any child who will be attending a funeral or has questions about funerary rites. In the story, little Hamza enjoys his Saturdays with a grandparent but must forgo his usual visit to attend a janaza (Muslim funeral rite) for a neighbor. Hamza learns about what happens at a janaza and why; he talks with his parents about how he feels. Back matter provides the reader with a glossary, notes for parents, suggested discussion questions, and more.

Young readers can easily identify with Hamza's mixed feelings. In fact, it is his initial unwillingness to attend, and then his desire to participate in prayers after reflection that makes this such a relatable book. Hussain deals gently and compassionately with the child's feelings, validating them and thereby offering a space for readers to examine their own emotions and reactions to death. The topics of death, funerals, and the afterlife are approached directly yet delicately such that children's questions a welcomed and addressed thoroughly. Hamza Attends a Janaza is a must-read for children preparing for a funeral.
