Review
T and I enjoyed taking turns reading the poems about each bird - we admired the art and each picked out birds of particular appeal before we read. Ewing's text, accompanied by Zerbetz's art, makes for a dynamic reading experience. The art pops, the poems are short and informative, and back matter provides a wealth of knowledge. "Kleptoparasitism" is my new favorite word; it's when one bird pirates another's catch, and bald eagles engage in it!

holds appeal for any age. The bold, bright illustrations capture the youngest readers' attention while the poetry flows comfortably (essential for a read-aloud!) and provides a glimpse into each bird's life. T's interest in a few species was sparked, eliciting the reading of more detailed back matter. This short picture book - only 14 birds are featured - offers a clear and intimate portrait of each bird. Zerbetz artwork is simply beautiful. And the publication as a whole engenders appreciation for and marvel at the natural world. I don't know how one could come away from Alaska is for the Birds! not delighted.
