Review
Abe is a particularly sympathetic character. He's considerate – and a bit selfish. He's honest – and a bit opportunistic. In short, he's an authentic representation of a fifth grader; he would have fit right in with my fifth-grade ELA students.

The premise of Six Thousand Doughnuts is that Abe interprets his free doughnut coupon whose cash equivalent is 1/20 of a cent to indicate that three dollars would buy him six thousand doughnuts. When he attempts to cash in on this price, chaos ensues. A food fight erupts in the doughnut shop, which leads ultimately to courtroom disputes on a Judge Judy-type reality show. Intertwined with his battle for doughnuts is his friendship with (crush on?) the doughnut shop owner's daughter. And his four siblings' and one cousin's  involvement in the quest to obtain what they believe is rightfully theirs.

There are a lot of small battles going on in Abe's life, and the six thousand doughnuts is the hill he's chosen to die on. Readers can empathize with his frustration and determination. Likewise, they'll be satisfied to witness the parental support. Although they are skeptical at first, they believe him and treat him as a reasonable and independent being. The parents are reasonable, down-to-earth people, as is Abe's teacher. Often, parents and teachers are foils, but it's clear that they are more than just a Peanuts-esque "wa waaa waaa" background entity. Ostensibly a story about sticking it to the man, Six Thousand Doughnuts is really about fostering relationships, empathizing with others, and advocating for yourself.

T wants me to read this with him, and I certainly will. We have fewer than 100 pages in Last Kids on Earth and the Skeleton Road, and then it's doughnut time...I think our snack might have to be doughnuts instead of the usual Chips and Chapters Doritos.
