Happy Earth Day!

kids vs. PLASTIC is a comprehensive handbook for combating the problem of plastic. Filled with color photographs, fascinating facts, and feasible solutions, this weighty paperback packs a wallop. Readers will learn how plastic enters the environment and what problems it poses. Readers learn everyday solutions, such as using metal water bottles or avoiding the purchase of synthetic clothing, as well as further steps, such as working with local and federal government. I found it fascinating, while T was interested in only certain parts. Since it is aimed at older children, this was unsurprising. I think my fourth-graders would have jumped around, reading here and there, had it been in my classroom.

T likes pointing out things that we already do, like using cloth napkins or using thrift-store dishes for parties, but was not particularly interested in other steps one could take to combat the epic polluter. His favorite toys are LEGO, which show up on a couple of pages; he was particularly interested to read about how LEGO is researching plant-based products. T's favorite pages were those featuring upcycled art. We have a bin of "not trash" that he pulls from to craft; it includes milk bottle caps, components from old toys, and the like, so I think he identified with the artists in the book. Overall, kids vs. PLASTIC is a solid selection for learning about plastic pollution on our planet.
