Plan to have dessert for breakfast after reading this! Pie for Breakfast is unlike other cookbooks for children – it's recipes within the frame of a school bake sale to raise money for the library. Diverse children work with their families to create a variety of treats (see list below); readers will see a range of skin colors, genders, religions, abilities, and family compositions. All the boxes are ticked, but it doesn't feel forced – just a realistic representation of an urban or suburban student body.

Each two-page spread features a different child. The left side tells who the child is, what they will make, and how their family will be involved. The right holds the recipe. With 13 recipes in all, the content is not overwhelming for beginning bakers, and you could possibly work through the book in a month (we haven't made all the recipes yet). Directions are clear and easy to follow, and the recipes are unique but not daunting. Having characters and a story contextualizing the recipes makes Pie for Breakfast interesting and the illustrations are giving me plant envy. I'm not sure if I want the baked goods or the houseplants more!

T is most excited to make the desserts "that the girl in the wheelchair makes" because "they're best of the rest" with their edible flower decorations. Here's looking forward to spring and summer blooms!
