Mom's Review
T attends an outdoor farm school; he enjoys walking in the woods and playing all morning on farm/in the woods. I also love walking in the woods, but I just kind of amble along. I often wish that I knew more about what I'm looking at or that I did something more than just wander. The idea of a guided nature sketchbook therefore has high appeal. Although The Nature Explorer's Sketchbook is aimed at children 10 and up, I see no reason why a younger child could not enjoy it with some support. After scrolling through the pdf, I want to use the real thing with T. I think we'd have oodles of fun exploring the woods together with specific goals/challenges to complete.

The Nature Explorer's Sketchbook is exactly what it sounds like: a sketchbook aimed at kids who like to explore nature. An introduction outlines what exploration is and names a few famous naturalists who used sketchbooks. Next come outdoor safety precautions, like checking yourself for ticks and not harassing the wildlife. Then it's down to business. Before the activities are rolled out, the exhortation, "You make your own rules," appears. If that's not license to revel in your artwork, I don't know what is. Different supplies are introduced, as well as how to use them, which is helpful for the beginner. There is lots of space to draw, and suggestions for what children could focus on. Art activities appear throughout, including step-by-step instructions for sketching a simple bird, drawing an insect, and mapping a trail.

The entire notebook is inviting for budding naturalists and hesitant artists alike. I could see making an event out of each activity; this notebook looks like a lot of fun!
