Mom's Review

My Little One is a unique love story featuring a parent and child. The diminutive size reflects titular “little one,” and later, the mother who becomes smaller as she ages and needs her son’s care.

The mother tells her increasingly larger child that she wants to tell him everything and that the story is very important. While nothing is explicitly narrated, it will be clear to readers the the story is that of the changing relationship between parent and child, from birth to death. Readers observe how the mother awaits the child’s birth, supports a growing son, joyfully sees her adult son as her equal, depends on him in her old age, and leaves a lasting imprint on her adult child after her death.

This small book packs a powerful message of undying love. The simplicity of Albertine’s line drawings emphasize the closeness between the mother and child, focusing the readers’ eyes on the pair as they focus only on each other.

My Little One is unlike other “loving you always” books we’ve read. It is not sappy. It is not fanciful. It is not disturbing. It is assuring, affirming, and honest.

If you read the Make Yourself at Home blog post, you already know that the we value learning about how people live all around the world. That extends to the literature they read. My Little One is a Swiss French import, and therefore also grants a glimpse into the children’s publishing world across the ocean.

Son's Review
(Age: 5)

Let's read!

She's getting smaller and smaller!

I thought it would be shorter.
