Deeplight crosses the boundaries of sci-fi, fantasy, and steampunk. It takes place in the Myriad, a group of islands whose inhabitants worshipped and feared the undersea gods. Now that the gods have all killed one another, scavengers descend to the undersea in submersibles, hauling up the gods' remains. When protagonist Hark finds the still-beating heart of a god, its power saves the life of his friend but causes unimaginable problems for all who come near it. Against this backdrop, readers are confronted with questions of loyalty and justice. This thought-provoking tale leaves one questioning just what is right and to whom one owes fidelity.

Deeplight is a YA book I would not hesitate to put in my child's hands – it's rich and exciting. Sometimes I read YA or paranormal or romance novels just to be entertained and I forget about them when I close the book. I finished Deeplight a few days ago and it has left an impression on me. Not only am I wondering what the characters are doing now, but I am wondering about the future of the entire civilization. I would love another novel in the same world.

Hardinge's work tops the list of YA books I've read (and I confess they are legion). The world creation, which is key for me, is meticulous. The unfolding of the story is perfectly paced. Deeplight is crafted with care, thought, and incredible imagination.
