Mom: Hey T, let's read a brave turtle book since we've been building the Ninja Turtle LEGO set today!

Son: That's a tortoise, not a turtle. There are differences between the two.

Donnie and Mikey: Let's read it anyway!!!

Donnie (Mom): Did you think Truman was brave? Why?

Mikey (Son): Yes. I thought he was too* brave in fact, because he got out of the cage, and he thought he would be able to catch the #11 bus but he didn't because his Sarah came home too soon.
*this is T's superlative form, not an indicator of excess

Mom: How did you feel as we read?

Son: Donnie and Mikey are talking about what they thought!

Donnie: How did you feel as we read, Mikey?

Mikey: My feeling was that I hoped Truman was gonna catch the #11 bus.

Donnie: Tell me what you liked?

Mikey: I liked that Truman was so brave.

Donnie: What did you think of Truman? The animal and the book.

Mikey: I liked them. I liked Truman and the book so much!

Mom's Review
A tiny tortoise is left at home when his Sarah attends her first day of school. He doesn't know where she has gone. When he reflects on the different morning routine, he becomes fearful that he will not see her again. In his anxiety, he becomes determined to find her and escapes his tank to follow her. Before he reaches the apartment door, however, she returns. The joy of their reunion is palpable.

Truman himself is an adorably drawn tortoise (not to be confused with a turtle), who has veggies and rocks to count and a trail for little fingers to follow. He is brave in the face of uncertainty and unwavering in his love and loyalty to Sarah. His worry echoes what some readers may feel in the face of new endeavors. Sweet and powerful, Truman is a satisfying read on multiple levels.

Truman is an acknowledgement of fear, a validation of uncertainty in the face of new experiences, and an encouragement to be brave and take risks.
