Son's Review
(Age: 4 and 1/2)
On what 1,001 Ants is about:
You can learn about ants and you're meant to look for Red Socks. It's an ant wearing red socks, and she's on each page. And sometimes she has a little speech bubble. Ants bury the ants that are dead, outside their home under a big pile of dirt.

On the little red ant:
I like him because he always wears those red socks. Can we find Red Socks?

On why he likes the book:
Because we always find Red Socks and it's funny how they all want to get eaten. Except Red Socks. It seems like she's going a safe way.

On what else you can learn about:
Plants. Mushrooms. Dung-beetles. Spiders. Mosquitos. Larva.

On what's fun to learn:
My favorite thing was how the eggs turn into those little white things [larva]...I like this [cep] mushroom because it looks funny!...We know that one – it's a dung beetle!...That's a fern. We see it in our yard!...We know about bark!
Can you find Red Socks?

On following the trail of ants:
I like it. I like how they all want to get eaten, but Red Socks doesn't. That gives me a relief.

On the ending:
I'm getting nervous...Oh, there's Red Socks! She's safe. I'm glad she didn't get eaten!

On a good time to read the book:
When we find ants so we can learn about ants if we forgot about them and we found them and we want to know about them again.

On who might like it:
Cousin G. because it's funny how they all want to get eaten and G. likes funny stuff.

Mom's Review
T sums up 1.001 Ants pretty well, but I'll briefly outline the best parts:
• a little red-socked ant to find on every page
• facts about flora and fauna we actually find in our own yard
• a parade of ants to follow through the book
• a few comments by the red-socked ant, for whom I have a special voice
• a surprise ending
• a fun over-sized format
• cute, colorful illustrations
A combination of fact, fancy, and fun, 1,001 Ants is one picture book I'm more than happy to read repeatedly.

Why we chose this book:
Thames and Hudson sent us a review copy to consider. We were delighted with the book, and so are sharing our honest review.
