Weekly Reading Roundup

Reading Roundup
Here you'll find Mom's and Son's latest reads and what we each liked best.

Monday, May 18, 2026
Mom: I finished several books that I had been reading for a while, plus a new Molly Harper, plus a few juvenile chapter books, so there is a lot to choose from. The best overall has to be The Time Regulation Institute by Ahmet Hamdi Tanipar. I was utterly transported and totally wrapped up in the people and events of the story skirts the genre of speculative fiction, is set in early 20th century Turkey, and has the one of the most compelling main characters I’ve ever met.

Mom:
I only finished one book on my trip, Fatima in Lucia's Own Words, and it was amazing to read what Lucia had to say about Jacinta and Francisco and their visions of Mary. If you have any interest in Marian apparitions, pick this one. It was recommended by our Catholic Portuguese tour guide and I am so glad I took her advice.

Son: My reading roundup picks are: Dragon Ball, Tomie, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, A Whole 'Nother Story, and literally every manga. It would take too long if I listed why I liked them all so instead I'll just say most of them where tense and funny, and Tomie was creepy. Signing out sarge!

Mom:
A bit of a different reading roundup for me - two graphics and a children's chapter book. If you read the blog tour post for Calliope Callisto Clark and the Search for Wisdom, you know I absolutely loved it. (The link is to the review post.) I also enjoyed Night of the Living Cat. It was a quick, cute, funny comic about everyone cats touch turning into cats themselves. But I enjoyed Tardi's Adele Blanc-Sec the most. Set in the 1910's of Paris, with a pulpy feeling, and filled with intrigue, the anthology of four serials utterly transported me and put me in the mood for visiting Paris!

Son: I very much enjoyed Attack on Titan, all the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure books, and Tokyo Ghoul. I enjoyed Attack on Titan because it was tense, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure because it was tense and funny, and Tokyo Ghoul because it was creepy.

Mom: Even if it weren't the only book I finished this week, The Midnight Library would be a top pick because it gave me a new perspective on regrets and the impact of a single life on others in unseen ways.

Son: Ha Ha you only finished one book, that's sad! As a matter of fact I choose every single book I read this week! They were all so good I can't pick only one I need to pick them all!

Monday, March 9, 2026
Mom: With two new books in two of my three favorite cozy mystery series, I have to pick both Murder at an Irish Session  and The Tattered Cover as my top picks this week. After I finished each, I missed the characters and the excitement of the the mysteries as they unfolded.

Books: Surprised by Joy by C. S. Lewis
Beloved by Toni Morrison
The Tattered Cover by Ellery Adams
Murder at an Irish Session by Carlene O'Connor

Son: My favorite books in this roundup are The Running Man and Soichi, because The Running Man was tense and Soichi was creepy and funny.

Books: Deep and Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn
The Running Man by Stephen King
Soichi by Junji Ito
Calliope Callisto Clark and the Search for Wisdom by Claudia Mills
Are Spider Webs Stronger than Steel? by Olivia Watson
Plankton by Ruth Owen

Son: My favorite book was Hide and Seeker because it was very creepy and entertaining.

Books: Tardigrades by Ruth Owen
Get Some Fancy Book Learnin' by Matt Groening
The Big Shrink by FGTeeV
Hide and Seeker by Daka Hermon
A Case of Bird Problems by Rachel Elliott
The Midnight Mystery by Betty Ren Wright

Mom: I'm going to take Son's approach and pick them all! I had never read The Bluest Eye before, and with all my coursework related to challenged and banned books, I wanted to finally read it. It was painful and powerful, and I couldn't look away. Grave Flowers was much lighter - a teen fantasy - and had lots of twists. The world creation was original, and the plot kept me up past midnight. And The Third Realm was so satisfying to finally read. The way the different storylines came together in this third installment in a series I've been following for years now was absolutely FANTASTIC!

Monday, February 16, 20206
Mom (books on left): It's a tough call between This Thing of Ours, which ties in with the banned books kick I'm on with school work AND is a powerful book in its own right, and The Dreadfuls, which was so suspenseful and a book I've been eagerly awaiting since its forthcoming publication was announced. They are so different that I pick both as my Top Picks.

Son (books on right):
My favorite books are Planet Tad and Solutions and Other problems- I am a robot.

Monday, February 2, 2026
Mom (books on right): T has me on a teen thrillers kick. I've been devouring them like a starving man. My favorites from this batch are Under the Surface and Catch Your Death. UtS is about teens lost in the catacombs under Paris and being chased by killer cultists - great characters, very atmospheric, absolute suspense. CYD is a snowed-in murder mystery that is perfect to read when the snow is piling up outside - exquisitely crafted and with a complex cast who is not what they seem. Oh, and there are secret passages!

Son (books on left): By far my #1 pick of this so called "roundup" is The Reappearance of Rachel Price I choose it because it is very funny and plotty-twisty. Also I forced ma to read it and she really liked- so why didn't she pick it?  Is there a two book limit? I don't care about the system I'm gonna pick all the books and nobody can do anything! I've gone mad with power! MWHA HA HA HA HA!!!!

Auf die Plätze, Fertig, Rettung!
Published by Phoenix International (https://pikidsmedia.com/de/)

Es ist Paw Patrol. It's about rescues. "Auf die Plätze, Fertig, Rettung!" Because es ist ein lieblings-Bücher. Es ist ein Soundbuch, und ich liebe Soundbücher!

T picked Paw Patrol: Ready, Set, Rescue! in German. He surprised me by telling me about it partly in German, as you see. T's dad and I are really pleased with how comfortable he has been speaking German lately, and I credit his German media intake. If Paw Patrol is in German, well, he'd best learn German, right? He selected this book as his Pick of the Week because he enjoyed the sounds in it.

The Scary Book
Well, it's not necessarily about anything. It's just scary. I can't tell you about it well, but I can copy one of the lines. "This crab pinches. There's so much more." "Wolves have sharp teeth. That's no fairy tale." [I picked it] because it's scary. Well, the part with the wolf and bat are kinda scary. Mainly it's good. Mainly it's all good. It has a few parts of it that are bad.
