The Moon Tonight
is a beautifully illustrated narrative explanation of how and why the moon looks like it changes every night. Readers can follow the large print and illustrations that offer a straightforward explanation of why we see what we do, and they can read the smaller inset text that has slightly more detail and accompanies an illustration of how the sky appears at different points throughout the day and night. I love both the text and the illustrations in this book, and they complement one another perfect. The text includes the reader with the narrator, adopting a conversational tone when talking about what "we" see. With each turn of the page, the narrator talks about what moon we see "tonight," while the illustrations show the moon in the sky above everyday situations that the reader can likely relate to. And those illustrations are both informative and enchanting. There is something magical about gazing at the moon, and Ho has replicated it in this book. Children (and the adults who read to them) who love watching as the moon moves and changes will find themselves well served by The Moon Tonight. This is splendid nonfiction for little readers.
