Mom's Review

Starting with what makes up soil, this original picture book - it opens with the spine held horizontally! - turns the traditional "House that Jack Built" structure into a tour through the life cycle of a plant. Jackie and her friends (one uses a mobility aid) cultivate a fruit and veggie garden, from preparing the soil to composting the rinds from their harvest. I like how a traditional poem is reworked into a science story and accompanied by bright, inviting illustrations that include realistic disability representation, which just adds to the win in my book!

The Soil in Jackie's Garden
is fun and informative, a unique and satisfying story for any outdoorsy kid or budding gardener.
