Out and About: A Tale of Giving shows the joy one experiences in helping another.

Daniel's parents take mysterious boxes somewhere unknown in the early hours of the morning. Asked about what they are doing, they brush it off as, "going out and about." When Daniel figures out that they are anonymously helping a neighbor who has fallen on hard times, he wants to contribute. Readers feel Daniel's impatience to know what is going on as well as his fulfilment in effecting a more equitable world by helping his neighbor.

Back matter explains Maimonedes' 8 levels of Tzedakah, which can be understood as charity and justice. In the story, Daniel's family practices the third level of tzedakah, where the giver is anonymous. I didn't know about the tradition of tzedakah, but what the story called to mind was Jesus' exhortation to, "not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing," when giving alms. Out and About will resonate with Jewish and Christian readers alike. It is so gratifying to see a beautifully illustrated, artfully written children's book that mirrors our priorities.
