Mom's Review

Grandpa is Here is poetry, an ode to the love shared by grandparents and grandchildren, love that transcends language barriers and political boundaries. Groenink's lovely illustrations evoke autumn as Grandpa arrives adn the onset of winter at the close of the book. The reader has the impression that even though Grandpa is visiting for only a season, the relationship is perpetual. In contrast to the changing season and in contrast to Grandpa's seasonal presence, the love and relationship weathers the passage of time, growing only stronger. I love the consistency of love that is conveyed!

The grandfather appears (from a speech bubble) to speak perhaps Arabic or Persian, and the celebratory meal is shared with the diners seated on a rug on the floor. I like that families using more than one language, or speaking different languages, is normalized. Furthermore, I like seeing traditions different from our family's represented. Quite frankly, that is one of the things I love about reading picture books with a little one - observing myriad ways of life and thereby enriching ours.
