The Jungle

By Helen Borten
Reprint Published in March, 2018 by Enchanted Lion (first published in 1968)

Why we chose this book:
Somewhere online I saw images from this book. I was struck by their beauty. I researched a bit to find out where I might find whatever book I was looking at, which resulted in Enchanted Lion providing a review copy for us.

Mom's Review

I would like to start by acknowledging that I have praised many of our recent reads, some quite highly. It may seem like I love everything that I read to T. This is far from true; a number of his books have "disappeared" because they were so bad. Since beginning this blog, I have been selecting what we read and review with increasing care. And I find that the care is paying off; I have found some truly spectacular books. This is one of them. And so, without further ado:

Layers of a tropical jungle are brought to life in this captivating reprint.

The Jungle is poetic, magical, and stunning. Borten's language makes the plants, animals, and insects come alive such that I felt enveloped in her jungle. And the art! Borten uses just enough detail to evoke the unique jungle creatures. I was enchanted by the art first, and drawn into the jungle with her verbiage. This is the way to learn about rainforests.

Son's Review
(age 3)
As we read:
Son, pointing to cover: I'll show you the nice picture!

Mom: Oooo. I think I like the pictures already.

Son: Could, could, could you read?
____________________________
Son, pointing to monkeys: Look! It looks like some are already acrobats!

Mom: Oh, here's the word you used, "acrobats."

Son: It looks like all of them are waiting. They almost look like grappling hooks.
____________________________
Son: What are air plants?

Mom: Good question. Let's keep reading, and we can look at some next time we're at the plant shop.
____________________________
Mom: Can you find the lizard in the picture?

Son: Oh. I already see the lizard.

Mom: Can you find any of the other hidden animals?

Son, whispering: The grasshopper.

Mom, reading: "Termites, ticks, land nails..."

Son, interrupting: Oh! Ticks!

After reading:
Mom: I felt like I was in the jungle. How about you?

Son: I didn't feel like I was in the jungle. I liked the colors. I liked the animals. But I wasn't in the jungle.

Mom: How did you feel as we read? What was the best part?

Son: Happy. That they [trees] were like ghosts.

Mom: Did you learn about plants or animals that are in the jungle? What was the strangest thing?

Son: All kinds of things. The ticks. Ticks suck your blood out and bite. That's why you should wear thick clothes. Clothes that don't pull up.

Mom: And I have two more questions for you. What does this book make you want to do?

Son: Be acrobatic, like spider monkeys.

Mom: What does the book make you think about?

Son: Happiness.

T is mysteriously opposed to dust jackets. We removed
the one for this book to find a treasure.
