Creepy Pair of Underwear!

Why we picked this book:
T loves "'pooky 'tories" (he's still working on the initial "s" sound), and always asks for spooky books when we visit our library. Last week we happened across this book and he immediately had to have it. He was so eager to read it that I had to repeatedly explain why I couldn't read it while I was driving - "I'm driving...I'm in the front seat...It's dark out..." But when we got home and I could finally read it to him, it was to our mutual enjoyment.

Mom's Review

A young bunny must cope with creepy underpants that seem to stalk him.

When Jasper rabbit needs new underpants, his mother takes him to buy "Plain White." Insisting that he is "not a little bunny anymore...a big rabbit now," he convinces his mother to buy a pair resembling Frankenstein's monster. He soon becomes frightened of them, as they glow and seem to have a life of their own. The story follows his creative attempts to rid himself of them, and his eventual overcoming of his fears.

The illustrations, done in black, white, grey, and a spooky green, are expressive and simple. Caregivers will enjoy the mommy rabbit's expressions, both parent rabbits' questions, and the "big rabbit" responses of Jasper. And children transitioning to underwear will enjoy the focus of the story. Overall, this was a big win for our current reading tastes - just a little bit spookiness, not truly scary. We will be sure to look for Reynolds's and Brown's other book, Creepy Carrots! soon.
