Azizi and the Little Blue Bird

Mom's Review
Azizi lives in a land of oppression and beauty, but everything of beauty is consumed by the tyrannical rulers who increase in size while their subjects shrink until Azizi and the others are small enough to mount birds like steeds. Together with an escaped blue bird, Azizi fights the tyrants, pricking them with a needle and releasing all the ill-gotten gains back into the world. The imagery is powerful, conveying the damage greedy rulers can inflict without getting graphic. Taken as a fairy tale about a hero or as an allegory for abuse of power, Azizi and the Little Blue Bird is a worthwhile read.
This Flemish import, billed as "a contemporary fairy tale of freedom against oppression inspired by the Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia," is both timeless and timely.
