The Crane and the Keeper
is a powerful narrative nonfiction picture book that spans Walnut the crane's 42-year life. When rescuers unwittingly allowed newly-hatched Walnut to imprint on them, they caused the white-naped crane to believes herself to be another human. Fast forwarding about 20 years, readers accompany devoted conservationist Chris Crowe in his efforts to gain Walnut's trust and facilitate the breeding of the vulnerable species. The story is astounding and so beautifully told and illustrated that readers will mourn the loss of Walnut at the end of her natural life, approximately twenty years of which she spent at the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute with Crowe as her chosen mate. The Crane and the Keeper is a valuable lesson in the impact we have on the natural world.
