Mom's Review

Poetic. Scientific. Beautiful.

Through lyric text do readers learn the unique ecology of the Sargasso Sea, a confluence of ocean currents that becomes its own ecosystem with Sargassum algae to shelter diverse life forms. Whether it be anemones and snails or crabs and shrimp, readers follow creatures as they eat, move, or hide from larger predators. Dynamic illustrations evoke the movement of the sea and give life to the range tiny beasts surviving amidst the Sargassum.

Creatures of which I have never previously heard, like the toothless pipefish, make for fascinating scientific content, while the beautiful depictions of turtles and whales offer an elegy to the precarious wonders of the watery world. Ideal for a primary grade audience, Sea Without a Shore makes for an enjoyable oratory experience for adults.

Sea Without a Shore is an AWESOME example of what non-fiction kid lit can be today. Readers with an interest in ocean life have something special in this picture book.
