Mom's Review
Jo's Special Gifts is narrated by a young child who introduces himself as someone whose mom says he has autism. He talks about his interests, like space, and habits, like stargazing in the evening; he acknowledges that he won't start a conversation, but would love to chat about the cosmos, and that he loves routine and may have a meltdown if that routine is disrupted. Readers get to know Jo just as they would any other character. In fact, Jo's Special Gifts puts me in mind of when readers meet Madeline or Corduroy.  I love how matter-of-fact the tone is -  autism is simply one aspect of who Jo is, no big deal. The author and illustrator have done an excellent job of introducing a character whose attributes may or may not resemble to reader, but who is eminently relatable. Using this picture book as either a mirror or window, parents can broaden their children's understanding of and appreciation for the rich diversity of humanity. Back matter offers further information about autism.

I hope that Jo's Special Gifts is just the start; it would be great to see a series develop from this. I see Jo's Special Gifts as a great addition to one's shelf because we need more representation that is done well. And this most certainly is!
